I chose the chapter from Lundy Bancroft’s book entitled: The Abusive Mentality. The reason that I have dedicated this page in my blog towards this chapter is because the abusive man has a way of making his behavior seem erratic and impulsive. By conducting himself in this way, the abuser is able to manipulate his partner into doing what he wants by keeping her feeling as though she is walking around on eggshells. Therefore, I chose this chapter to show that, while his behaviors may seem all over the place, they are actually calculated and thought out with the sheer purpose of maintaining control.
Below you will find several links. Two are websites and one is to an article. I chose the websites that I did for this page because they provide clear insight into the thought processes that go on inside the mind of an abuser. They also provide characteristics associated with the abuser and the causes of such abuse. The article that I chose breaks down the thought processes that occur inside of the mind of an abuser. This article brings to light the very real fact that abusive behaviors are justified in the mind of the abuser, which in turn provides insight for victims of domestic violence. Last you will find a video clip. This clip was chosen because it portrays what control in domestic violence looks like, both in the beginning and the end of the relationship.
"Is the abusive man's thinking distorted: Certainly. A man's partner is not his child, and the freedoms he "grants" her are not credits to be spent like chips when the urge to control her arises. But his rules make sense to him, and he will fight to hang on to them"
(Bancroft 2002, p.53).
