Types of Abusive Men

I chose the chapter from Lundy Bancroft’s book entitled: The Types of Abusive Men. I have chosen this chapter as a part of my blog because abusers come in many forms from the verbal abuser, also known as the Water Torturer, and the controlling partner, also known as the Demand Man to Mr. Sensitive, who is sweet, gentle and supportive, when not being abusive. It is my hope that by providing further information on this topic, that victims will be able to realize that they are in a relationship with one of these men and need to find a way out.

Below you will find several links. Two are websites and one is to an article. I chose the websites that I did for this page because they provide information about the types of abuse, ways to ensure your safety, and how to identify if you are in an abusive relationship. The article that I chose is important to our discussion because it clearly lays out the more common types of domestic violence. Last you will find a video clip that depicts one woman’s life as a victim of domestic violence. It shows very real images of her husband assaulting her in front of her children and demonstrates the power that an abusive partner can have over his victim.

Why Does He Treat Her So?

His touch was not a loving one,
Meant to soothe her fears.
An embrace was not a warm one,
A display for their peers.
The voice was not a kind one,
Full of scorn and jeers.
Her life was not an easy one,
Seen through eyes of tears.

With a promise to love and cherish
Throughout all her life,
Why does he treat her so,
The one he calls his wife.

Every night she prays to God,
To save her from this hell,
Of broken hearts and shattered dreams,
Her existence a hollow shell.
The face she shows to others,
Is just a shadowed veil.
The loving home she wants,
Has turned into her jail.

With a promise to love and cherish
Throughout all her life,
Why does he treat her so,
The one he calls his wife.
